U.S. Military Joint Exercises
The joint exercises provided an opportunity American military personnel to train together in realistic field conditions. Such exercises could involve tactical movements, communications, logistics, command-and-control procedures, transportation, and the coordination of units operating in difficult terrain. Beyond the practical value of the training itself, these activities helped officers and soldiers become familiar with American military doctrine, organization, equipment, and operational methods.
Dezful, in Khuzestan Province in southwestern, was particularly significant as a military and strategic location. Its position near the Zagros Mountains and the Iraqi frontier made the region important for military planning and training. The surrounding area offered a variety of terrain in which military units could conduct field exercises and practice the movement and deployment of personnel and equipment.
