Khark Island, situated in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Khuzestan, had a different but equally important strategic character. The island was closely associated with petroleum industry and occupied a significant position in the Gulf. Its location made it relevant not only to economic infrastructure but also to the broader strategic considerations surrounding the Persian Gulf during the Cold War.
The 1964 exercises therefore took place against a wider background of regional competition and Cold War security concerns.
