U.S. Military Joint Exercises
In 1964, the Imperial Army (Imperial Ground Forces) and the United States conducted joint military exercises in the regions of Dezful and Khark. The exercises reflected the close military relationship between and the United States during the Cold War and the growing cooperation between the two countries’ armed forces.
The training brought and American military personnel together for field exercises designed to strengthen coordination, operational readiness, and familiarity with military procedures and equipment. Dezful, in southwestern, was an important military center because of its strategic location and proximity to major training areas. Khark Island, located in the Persian Gulf, was also of considerable strategic importance because of its position along southern coastline and its developing role in the country’s oil infrastructure.
