The honorary Doctor of Laws bestowed upon Shahanshah Ariyamehr thus carried a significance beyond the presentation of an academic distinction. The relationship between Penn and would continue through the development of Pahlavi University, which became an important experiment in bringing American-style university education to the Middle East.

A photograph dated April 18, 1962, shows Mohammad Reza Pahlavi holding his honorary degree while shaking hands with President Harnwell; another records the two men walking together across the Penn campus.
