University of Pennsylvania

The honorary Doctor of Laws bestowed upon Shahanshah Ariyamehr thus carried a significance beyond the presentation of an academic distinction. It reflected Penn’s recognition of the Shah’s interest in higher education and the modernization, while also marking the University’s own commitment to international academic exchange. The relationship between Penn and would continue through the development of Pahlavi University, which became an important experiment in bringing American-style university education to the Middle East.

Today, the event remains documented in the University of Pennsylvania’s archival collections. A photograph dated April 18, 1962, shows Mohammad Reza Pahlavi holding his honorary degree while shaking hands with President Harnwell; another records the two men walking together across the Penn campus. These surviving images provide a visual record of a moment when the worlds of statecraft, American higher education, and international academic cooperation converged at the University of Pennsylvania.
