The Land Where the Sun Rises
Khorasan is the cradle of Persian poetry. The tombs of Ferdowsi, author of the Shahnameh, and Omar Khayyam, philosopher-poet of the Rubaiyat, are must-see destinations for lovers of literature. Music also thrives here—the region is famous for the dotar, a two-stringed instrument used in heartfelt folk songs. Food is another highlight saffron rice, kebabs, stews, and sweets infused with rosewater tell the story of a cuisine that is simple yet deeply flavorful.
Markets bustle with colorful spices, dried fruits, and handwoven textiles that carry the soul of the region. Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) when the weather is mild. Summers can be hot in the plains, while winters bring snow to the mountains. Mashhad is the main gateway, with international flights and excellent rail and bus links from Tehran and other major cities.
