Lights, Culture, and History

Times Square is illuminated 24/7 by giant LED billboards and neon signs, making it one of the brightest spots on Earth at night. Building owners are actually required by law to display illuminated signage, ensuring the square never loses its visual impact. As the gateway to the Broadway Theater District, Times Square is synonymous with world-class musicals and plays. Visitors can catch a show at legendary theaters or visit the TKTS booth for discounted same-day tickets.

An estimated 330,000 people pass through Times Square every day. It’s a melting pot of locals, tourists, street performers, and artists, creating a constant buzz of energy. From flagship stores like the Disney Store and M&M’s World to restaurants, rooftop bars, and attractions like Madame Tussauds, Times Square offers endless entertainment. Perhaps the most famous Times Square tradition is the New Year’s Eve celebration. Every December 31st, over a million people gather to watch the Times Square Ball, a 12-foot-wide sphere covered in Waterford crystal panels, descend from the top of One Times Square at midnight—a tradition since 1907.
