When The Beatles rose to fame, they also revolutionized men’s hair. Their mop tops—shaggy, longer cuts that covered the forehead and ears—became a global sensation. Parents disapproved, but young fans copied the style religiously. On the West Coast, surfer culture inspired sun-bleached, tousled hair. Longer, casual cuts reflected an adventurous lifestyle and the popularity of beach culture.

By the late ’60s, men embraced longer hairstyles influenced by rock stars and hippies. Sideburns, mustaches, and shoulder-length hair became part of the rebellious image that defined the era. The Women’s Liberation Movement encouraged practicality and freedom from rigid beauty routines, leading some women to cut their hair short or wear it naturally.
