Frail in health and visibly aged, Mossadegh nevertheless commanded the courtroom with sharp wit and determination. Observers noted how he often challenged the judges, arguing that the Shah’s own unconstitutional actions—such as dissolving parliament—had destabilized the country. He declared that his only true “crime” was defending sovereignty against foreign oil interests.
