A New Generation
Born on July 26, 2011, in Boston, Massachusetts, Iryana was born approximately seven months after the death of her father.
Her birth came at a particularly emotional moment for the Pahlavi family. Prince Alireza had died in Boston on January 4, 2011. According to the official biography published by Empress Farah’s website, Alireza was born in Tehran in 1966 and was the third child of Mohammad Reza Shah and Farah Pahlavi. He later pursued higher education in the United States, studying music and ethnomusicology at Princeton University, ancient studies at Columbia University, and continuing doctoral studies in ancient studies and philology at Harvard University.
For Alireza’s family, his daughter therefore became an important connection to his memory and legacy. When Empress Farah first met Iryana after her birth, she spoke publicly about the powerful emotions of seeing her granddaughter while remembering her son. She also recalled that members of the family immediately noticed similarities between the baby and Prince Alireza.
