Remembering Jaklin Vigen
Jaklin Vigen, born December 19, 1952, in Tehran, grew up surrounded by music and artistry. Her father, Viguen Derderian, known simply as Viguen, was one of the most beloved and groundbreaking figures in popular music, often referred to as the “Sultan of Jazz.” Growing up in such a household, Jaklin was exposed to artistry from an early age, which deeply shaped her passion for songwriting, poetry, and composition.
Her Armenian roots played a key role in shaping her musical identity, blending Persian pop with Armenian and Western musical influences. Her first major recognition came when she wrote for Googoosh, most famous female pop star. The song “Parandeh” (The Bird) became an instant classic, admired for its emotional depth and poetic language. From the late 1970s onward, she became one of the most sought-after lyricists and composers, working with nearly every major singer in exile after the 1979 revolution.
