In August 1953, Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh was overthrown in a coup d’état orchestrated by British and American intelligence services, with backing from domestic royalist and military forces.

Mossadegh, who had gained worldwide attention for nationalizing oil industry in 1951, had become a symbol of anti-colonial resistance and democratic aspirations. His removal marked a dramatic shift political trajectory.
