Miller, too, was under immense pressure. During their marriage, he was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and refused to name names, an act of integrity that caused significant professional risk. At the same time, he was struggling to write meaningful work while navigating the emotional volatility of their relationship.

In an attempt to rescue their bond, Miller wrote The Misfits as a vehicle for Marilyn—a script that would showcase her depth as an actress, and possibly reconnect them as creative partners. The film, directed by John Huston and co-starring Clark Gable, was Monroe’s most serious and emotionally demanding role to date. However, by the time filming began in 1960, their marriage was already unraveling.
