After law school, he joined the Air Force and became a Judge Advocate General, JAG. The career move took him to Europe, which he said helped him overcome the ‘strain’ of his parents’ deaths.The failing family business was still a worry. ‘Most days, even when I was busy with work, I had a general feeling of being liberated from heavy responsibilities,’ he recalls. ‘It was in many respects the most carefree time in my life.’
The couple ended their courtship after a couple months when Carol left England for the United States. She later married and had children, he said, and a very successful career, working at one point on four-star general Colin Powell’s staff. His relationship with the second woman, a Lufthansa flight attendant named Sylvia, ‘became serious quickly,’ he said. ‘At one point, I thought I would propose, or at least I entertained the idea. It wasn’t to be, though,’ he wrote. ‘She was responsible for an aging mother in Vienna, and I was South Carolina boy, who needed to go home.’
