Types, Benefits, Risks, and What to Expect
Plastic surgery is commonly divided into two major categories: reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery aims to restore the function and appearance of body parts affected by accidents, burns, cancer, congenital conditions, or other medical problems. Examples include breast reconstruction after cancer treatment, treatment of severe burns, and repair of certain facial injuries.
Cosmetic surgery, sometimes called aesthetic surgery, is performed primarily to change or enhance a person’s appearance. Common procedures include rhinoplasty (nose surgery), facelifts, eyelid surgery, breast augmentation or reduction, liposuction, and abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck.
