The Terraced Village in the Clouds

The ancient city of Masouleh, with its terraced architecture and mist-covered mountains, forms the perfect backdrop for this cultural gathering. The streets and squares are filled with music, traditional instruments such as the ghichak, kamancheh, and dohol resonating through the air as dancers in brightly woven garments circle in harmony.

The Ghasemabadi Dance, with its graceful yet powerful steps, reflects the agricultural rhythms of Gilan — planting, harvesting, and celebrating the cycles of life. Alongside the dance, the audience witnesses the stirring spectacle of Pahlevani and Zurkhaneh rituals, known as “ancient sports.” Athletes, or pahlevans, demonstrate strength, endurance, and respect for tradition, accompanied by the beat of the zarb drum and guided by the master of ceremonies.
