The 1979 Nationwide Attack

Revolutionary tribunals carried out swift executions of suspected Kurdish militants, sometimes without fair trials. Entire communities fled to the mountains or across borders, creating long-term refugee crises. Kurdish parties were outlawed; their leaders were imprisoned, executed, or forced into exile.

The August 1979 attack is remembered in Kurdistan as a national tragedy and a defining moment of betrayal. Many Kurds believed the revolution had promised freedom and justice, but instead they were met with military repression.
