The 1979 Nationwide Attack
On August 18, 1979, Khomeini issued a fatwa calling the Kurdish movement an “enemy of Islam” and ordered the Revolutionary Guards and military to launch a full-scale attack. This transformed what had been sporadic clashes into a coordinated nationwide offensive.
His decree urged the armed forces to “crush the conspirators” and warned against any compromise with Kurdish groups. This fatwa legitimized the use of overwhelming force and framed Kurdish demands as treasonous separatism rather than a quest for cultural or political rights.
