The 1979 Nationwide Attack
Many ordinary Kurds, even if not aligned with political parties, provided food, shelter, and logistical aid to fighters. Throughout the 1980s, despite repression, Kurdish fighters engaged in hit-and-run tactics against government forces, maintaining a state of low-level insurgency.
Many Kurds had supported the Revolution in its early stages, hoping for democracy and recognition. Instead, they were met with tanks and executions. The violence entrenched mistrust that continues to affect relations between the Kurdish community and Tehran.
Kurdish activists often mark the anniversary with memorials and calls for justice, framing it as both a tragedy and a symbol of resilience. The state insisted on a centralized Islamic system, while Kurds demanded federalism or autonomy. This conflict has never been resolved.
