The 1979 Nationwide Attack
In 1979, was undergoing profound transformation. The Revolution earlier that year had overthrown the Pahlavi monarchy, leading to the establishment of the Islamic Republic under Khomeini. During this turbulent period, different ethnic, religious, and political groups sought recognition, autonomy, or influence in shaping the new order.
The Kurdish population, concentrated in the western provinces, had long demanded greater cultural rights, political representation, and, in some factions, autonomy. With the collapse of the monarchy, Kurdish organizations—such as the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (KDPI) and Komala—mobilized to secure self-rule and local control.
