Karimi later expanded her career beyond acting and moved behind the camera. In 2001, she made the documentary To Have or Not to Have, which focused on infertility. This marked the beginning of her work as a filmmaker. Her first feature film as a director was One Night (Yek Shab), released in the mid-2000s. The film was selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, giving Karimi an important international platform as a director.
Karimi’s involvement with international cinema has extended beyond her own films. She has served as a jury member at several major international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, and other prominent festivals. In 2007, she was a member of the Cannes jury for Cinéfondation and Short Films. Her participation on international juries reflects the recognition she has earned within the global film community and demonstrates that her career extends beyond simply being an actress in films.
