Germany’s Conservative Politics
Friedrich Merz is a prominent German politician and the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), one of Germany’s major center-right parties. Merz was born on November 11, 1955, in Brilon. He studied law and began his professional career as a lawyer, later working in the financial and corporate sectors.
He entered the German parliament (Bundestag) in the 1990s and quickly rose within the CDU. Merz became chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, positioning himself as a leading figure in the party’s conservative wing. During this time, he was considered a key rival to Angela Merkel.
