From Nationalist Outsider
Domestically, Meloni has focused on stability. After years of fragile coalition governments in Italy, her administration has aimed to project an image of continuity and reliability. She has sought to reassure businesses, financial markets, and international partners that Italy will remain fiscally responsible and committed to long-term reforms. While she campaigned on strong nationalist themes, in practice she has avoided dramatic economic confrontations with the European Union, choosing instead to negotiate and compromise when necessary.
One of her biggest challenges has been managing Italy’s public debt, which is among the highest in Europe. Her government has tried to control spending while still supporting families and small businesses affected by inflation and rising energy costs. This has required difficult political choices, as many of her supporters expected more expansive welfare and tax cuts. Meloni has responded by framing restraint as a form of patriotism, arguing that financial discipline protects future generations.
