Democracy on Trial

After serving three years in prison, Mossadegh was moved to his home in Ahmadabad, where he spent the remainder of his life under strict surveillance. Though cut off from politics, he continued to receive visitors who saw him as a symbol of lost democracy.

He was barred from publishing articles or speaking publicly, but his quiet presence served as a constant reminder of the Shah’s reliance on repression. Mossadegh tended to his garden, read extensively, and kept up correspondence with family and friends until his death in 1967.
