The Woman Who Held a Princess

When the Iranian Revolution began in 1978, Leila was just 8 years old. The royal family fled in January 1979, beginning a life in exile. At that young age, the upheaval was disorienting, and her childhood nurse likely played a key role in maintaining a sense of continuity and comfort.

While the full list of those who accompanied the royal family into exile is not publicly detailed, it’s believed that a small circle of trusted aides and staff—including one or more of the children’s caregivers—remained with them, at least during the early stages of their displacement in Egypt, Morocco, the Bahamas, and later the United States.
