The Voice of Sorrow and Strength

In 1982, Bergen married Halis Serbest, a relationship that would become infamous due to the abuse she suffered. In October of that year, Serbest orchestrated an acid attack on Bergen during a performance in İzmir, resulting in the loss of vision in her right eye and severe facial burns. Despite the trauma, Bergen returned to the stage, covering her injured eye with her long hair, and continued to produce music that resonated with many.

Bergen’s life was tragically cut short on August 14, 1989, when Serbest, after being released from prison, shot and killed her during a promotional tour in Adana. Her mother was also injured in the attack. Bergen was 30 years old at the time of her death. She was buried in her hometown of Mersin, where her grave has become a site of remembrance .
