New York City’s new rules for taking dogs on the subway

Unlike service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs) do not have the same transit privileges. ESAs must still follow the subway’s bag rule. However, the MTA has begun exploring ways to better support riders with documented needs, including clearer signage and more accessible resources for pet owners with mental health-related disabilities.

With the rise in pet ownership across NYC, there is growing advocacy for a more flexible and inclusive transit policy. Even when your dog is properly contained, navigating the subway with a pet can be stressful.
