Karaj Dam
When it was built in the late 1950s, Karaj Dam was considered a pioneering engineering achievement in the Middle East. Its concrete arch design was chosen for its strength and efficiency, particularly suited to the narrow, steep-sided canyon of the Karaj River. This type of dam uses less concrete than gravity dams and is highly resistant to water pressure.
Before construction, intensive geological surveys were conducted to ensure the stability of the surrounding rock formations, which are crucial for an arch dam’s success.
