Firstborn, middle, or youngest? Birth order affects children’s health
Middle Child Middle children, positioned between the “responsible” firstborn and the “free-spirited” youngest, often play the role of the family’s peacemaker. They tend to please others but are also seen as rebellious individuals seeking their own path. Research shows middle children are more likely to engage in risky behaviors compared to their older siblings. However, a large study published in February found that middle children rank highest in honesty, kindness, and cooperation.
Some point to patterns of self-imposed silence and feelings of being overlooked in middle children, noting they often neglect their own needs because they were never the sole focus. This can impact mental health, sometimes manifesting as anxiety or depression, especially if their role in the family is not clearly defined or acknowledged. Physically, middle children typically have stronger immune systems than firstborns, as they are exposed to germs earlier.
