Their relationship defied public expectations. On June 29, 1956, Monroe and Miller were married in a quiet civil ceremony in White Plains, New York, followed by a traditional Jewish ceremony two days later. The union symbolized a blending of two vastly different worlds: the glamour of Hollywood and the gravitas of American theater.

However, their marriage faced intense pressures—from the media spotlight, Monroe’s personal struggles with mental health and addiction, and Miller’s challenges as a writer during the Red Scare. The couple collaborated on the 1961 film The Misfits, which Miller wrote for Monroe. While the film has since gained critical appreciation, the making of it strained their relationship further.
