Karaj Dam
Karaj Dam, also known as Amir Kabir Dam, is a significant hydro-engineering structure located in the Alborz province, roughly 63 kilometers northwest of Tehran. Built on the Karaj River, the dam plays a vital role in supplying drinking water to Tehran, generating hydroelectric power, and supporting agricultural irrigation in the surrounding areas.
Construction of the Karaj Dam began in 1957 and was completed in 1961. It was one of the earliest major dam projects and marked a milestone in the country’s modernization efforts during the mid-20th century. The dam was designed by an Italian company and constructed with the cooperation and international engineers. It is a concrete arch dam, well-suited for the narrow gorge in which it stands.
